Biography

Dr. Ronald Edward Henry is a pioneer in Caribbean cardiology whose clinical innovation and leadership have significantly advanced the standard of cardiovascular medicine across the region. Born in 1954, Dr. Henry’s academic excellence was evident early on during his time at Queen’s Royal College, where he earned distinction in every subject at the Advanced Level and placed third nationally in the sciences in 1973. These early achievements set the stage for the brilliant medical career that followed.

Dr. Henry earned his medical degree with Honours in Anatomy and Physiology from the University of the West Indies, Mona. He completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at the State University of New York and further specialized in Cardiology at Howard University’s D.C. General Hospital. He went on to become board certified in both Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Henry’s legacy is firmly rooted in clinical milestones. He established Trinidad and Tobago’s first Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in 1992 and performed the country’s first coronary angiogram. He played a crucial role in developing Trinidad’s first open-heart surgery team and introduced numerous innovative procedures to the region, including renal angioplasty, biventricular pacemaker implantation, and aortic endostent grafts.

His steering roles have included being President of the Caribbean Cardiac Society, Governor of the Caribbean Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, and Medical Chief of Staff at St. Clair Medical Centre. He currently serves as Medical Director at both the Advanced Cardiovascular Institute (ACI) and its surgical division ACI Surgical Therapies, as well as Chair of Cardiovascular Associates Limited. Dr. Henry has also contributed to academia, serving as a lecturer at the American International School of Medicine. His commitment to public health extends beyond clinical practice, as he co-founded the Heartbeat International Program in Trinidad and Tobago, providing pacemakers to indigent patients. His awards include the Chaconia Medal (Silver), the Caribbean Cardiac Society’s Distinguished Service Award, and accolades from various national health authorities. He is a Fellow of multiple international cardiovascular societies and continues to function in a mentoring capacity for cardiology trainees in the Caribbean.
